Young and Fun – What To Do at Big Bear Lake

Snow Summit with a candle.
Happy 60th anniversary Snow Summit! The candle is a nice touch.

Sixty is a big number. It is a big deal when someone reaches their 60th birthday or anniversary, and in 2013 there are plenty of people celebrating theirs. The girl that just wanted to have fun, Cyndi Lauper, turns 60 this year.  The voice of Buzz Lightyear and the famous tool man, Tim Allen, will also be celebrating his 60th. Hulk Hogan also will be leg dropping the big six zero this year. Corvettes West will be having a banner year this year, celebrating the fact that the iconic Corvette will be rolling off the assembly line for the 60th model year through 2013. But to us in Big Bear, this weekend will be the 6oth celebration we are looking forward to the most. Our neighbors over at Snow Summit are celebrating their 60th anniversary!

A Glittering Tribute to Snow Summit

The traditional gift for a 60th birthday or anniversary is diamonds. We hope the glittering snow will be enough for everyone to enjoy Snow Summit’s 60th anniversary celebration this Saturday, beginning at 1 PM. There will be a live band playing at their new pub, and discounts on food and drinks during the day. They will cap off the party with a fireworks show, making the sky sparkle as much as the snow. It will be an amazing anniversary party, celebrating all of the people that helped them reach this important milestone. While celebrating at Snow Summit, you can also check out the Junior Olympics Qualifier which will be going on this weekend.

A Smooth Jam at Bear Mountain

Every great snowboarder has started somewhere, and Volcom’s Peanut Butter and Rail Jam is a perfect place to show off your growing skills as a snowboarder. This is a competition specifically geared for amateurs and kids, with four divisions in which to make your mark. Falling does not count against you, so you have a chance to try out all of those tricks you have been practicing in private. The Peanut Butter and Rail Jam is a fun, high energy event, and a chance to meet other boarders, win some prizes, and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! What more can you ask for?

Walking Through the Winter Wonderland

Maybe skiing or snowboarding isn’t your thing. You want to take it a little slower while still taking in the natural outdoor beauty of the Big Bear region and learn a little more about how the wilderness changes here in the winter. The Big Bear Discovery Center is continuing to offer snowshoeing tours through the winter months to small groups. Not only will you learn a new way to explore the world in the snow, you will also get a guided tour of the area. A great way for the family to spend some time together! Contact them at (909) 382-2790 to set up your tour.

This weekend is going to be a great one up here in the mountains, and we hope to see you soon. The snow is looking fantastic, the weather is nice and cold, and there will be plenty to see and do around. If you’re planning a visit we have some great cabins and hotel rooms available, so you have a place to relax and warm up between all the outdoor events. Have fun hitting the slopes this weekend, and happy 60th anniversary to Snow Summit!
