All About Adventure Passes

To park at select locations in the San Bernardino Forest, the US Forest Service requires the purchase of an Adventure Pass. Visitors to recreational sites who do not park on the premises do not require the associated permit. Adventure Passes can be purchased locally at several California vendors, as well as online. The funds gathered from these recreational permits help support forest management and cleanup of the surrounding national park.

Boulder Bay Park

Most residents and visitors say Boulder Bay Park has the best universal views of Big Bear. It’s also known as the best overall spot for the most scenic view of Big Bear Lake. Whether the kids are playing in the snow or running through the park, there are plenty of spaces to find a tranquil spot and capture scenes of Big Bear in all its glory year-round. The park also has a small dock to walk out on Big Bear Lake and take pictures of the lake, rock formations and the mountains. It’s also an excellent spot for nature watching, fishing and seeing a fabulous sunset over the lake. The park is free, has tables for picnics and public bathrooms too.

Big Bear Lake Views at Castle Rock Trail

It’s no secret the best Big Bear Lake views are often found on the surrounding trails. The Castle Rock Trail is no exception, with gorgeous scenery awaiting those intrepid hikers who make it to higher ground. For help navigating the route, look for the trail markers, rock piles enclosed in an upright wire mesh. This moderate hike begins with a steep incline up a path littered with views of giant, granite boulders intermixed with Jeffrey pines.

After the first half mile trek, expect things to level out. Visitors will find some of the best nature sights along this trail, including a panoramic display of Big Bear Lake views, small, rocky waterfall and the eponymous castle rock boulder lookout. Parking is free, but limited, and dogs are allowed on the trail. The entire route is roughly 1.6 miles, double that for the round trip.

Cougar Crest Trail

You have to work a bit harder for an incredible view of Big Bear from this trail. Cougar Crest Trail is for intermediate to advanced hikers. The 2.5-mile trail will give you a workout that ends in amazing views, allowing you to take a breather while reveling in the scenery. The first mile is a gentle uphill climb that gets more difficult during the second mile. The stopping point puts you out on the famous Pacific Crest Trail, where you can keep hiking or enjoy wide-open spaces and sweeping views of Big Bear Lake and the surrounding mountains. Expect to take 2-3 hours to complete a hike on the Cougar Crest Trail. Additionally, accessing this location requires an Adventure Pass.

Lakeview Point Scenic Overlook

Travelers heading east on California State Route 18 should consider stopping at Lakeview Point Scenic Overlook. True to its name, this spot offers eastbound visitors their first glimpse of Big Bear Lake in the distance, surrounded by mountains and forested ravines. As spring comes to a close, you’ll find some of the best views of wildflower growth peaking out amongst the surrounding snowy conifers. The fall sights are also exceptional, as the trees begin to shed their fragrant needles in anticipation of the onset of winter. Lakeview Point Scenic Overlook is open year-round, so you can enjoy the next views of Big Bear Lake, no matter the season.

Sunset Views at Stanfield Cutoff

At the eastern edge of Big Bear Lake, the Stanfield Cutoff connects North Shore Drive with Big Bear Boulevard with a bridge spanning across the water. In addition to the road, a pedestrian corridor allows sightseers to snap the best sunrise and sunset views of the lake. Inquisitive visitors can even meander off the walkway and explore the shores of Big Bear Lake. The placid water of the lake is contrasted with the surrounding forests and mountainous terrain all throughout Big Bear. On the north side of Stanfield Cutoff, bikers can enter the 2.5-mile Alpine Pedal Path Trail, a well-paved route which accommodates strollers and wheelchairs as well. The southern end of the Stanfield Cutoff is also notable, located adjacent to the Stanfield Marsh Wildlife and Waterfowl Preserve.
