The first National Winter Trails Day will be on Jan. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Big Bear Discovery Center. Snowshoers of all skill levels can join in the great outdoors for fun and exercise while burning those lingering post-holiday lingering calories. Demonstrations and tours are free. There is space available for up to 60 participants with three groups of 20 venturing out for demonstrations and 45-minute tours. Sign-ups happen every 30 minutes beginning at 10 a.m. Hikes depart from the Discovery Center from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration for the more advanced tour is recommended.  There will be a Leave No Trace, Plan Ahead and Prepare presentation on outdoor winter sports, a winter backpack campsite demonstration, plus prizes for games like Guess the Weight of the Backpack.

For the kids: The Discovery Center youth volunteers provide a snowman-building contest complete with prizes and there will be hot chocolate and s’mores available to raise funds for their youth volunteer program.

For snowboarders:  The winner of Analog’s Design Unlikely Features contest will have his/her dream creation built and Analog will bring the winner out to the Design Unlikely Features Contest on January 7th at Bear Mountain. The winner is also is invited to participate in the first ever contest on their winning feature.

Happy New Year!
