5 Things To Do On Vacation in Big Bear in the Spring

The vacation fun doesn’t end in the Big Bear Lake region just because the ski season is winding down. Big Bear is truly a four season resort and there are a variety of fun activities for couples and families to enjoy year round. Here are five spring activities that offer fun and excitement to residents and visitors alike.

Skiing, tubing and Alpine slide

Alpine SlideBelieve it or not, skiing and tubing conditions are often still excellent in the spring in Big Bear Lake. Snow Summit is often open until at least late April depending on the weather, and there’s  tons of fun to be had at the Alpine Slide, Southern California’s only authentic bobsled experience.  Take the magic carpet ride up the mountain, and then have fun tubing or sliding your way down. The bobsled track is ¼ mile of pure twisting and turning fun! Check the websites for slope and weather conditions.

During the spring, Big Bear Lake is teeming with rainbow trout!  Starting with the trout spawning run, which runs right through Big Bear Frontier  in April through to the May Trout Classic and Troutfest, there’s plenty for the amateur and experienced fisher to enjoy. The Fishing Association of Big Bear Lake sponsors the event and funds raised from entry fees go toward fish plants and conservation projects.

Farmers Market

The opening of the Big Bear Farmers’ Market is something to look forward to each spring at Big Bear Frontier .  The annual market started in 1992.  All farm vendors are local to Big Bear and must sell their own produce from within a 300 mile radius. If you’re buying local or if you’re looking for farm to table produce in Big Bear, this is the place to be! Enjoy freshly picked fruits, vegetables and flowers from local farmers along with retail, craft and baked goods. A visit to the market is perfect for a light lunch or to pick up food for a vacation picnic on the beach.

The market is held at the Big Bear Lake Convention Center on the corner of Division Drive and Big Bear Boulevard, and is open each Tuesday from 8:30 am until 1:00 pm. The market runs until October or when the produce season winds down.

You don’t have to travel to a far off exotic location to experience the thrill of zipping through the air like a bird. Zip lining tours in Big Bear Lake offer a family adventure just a short drive away. Zip high above the forest floor and take in mountain views while crossing over rocky canyons. Zip lines are open year round, even in the snow.

Off Road 4×4 tours

Take your own 4×4 vehicle into the mountains or hire an expert for a guided tour. For those with their own vehicle, Big Bear Flats offers several secluded trails for off roaders of various skill levels. Bring a picnic and make a day of it! Getting there is easy, from Big Bear Frontier Cabins, travel along the northwestern side of Big Bear Lake to Forest Rd 3N14.

For those wanting a guided tour, Big Bear Jeep Tours bring you into the mountains to travel original wagon and truck roads. You’ll see rocky valleys, raging rivers, meandering streams, and the spring flora and fauna emerging from the forest floor. There are many tours to choose from including sunset tours, stargazer trips, and historic tours.  One popular tour is a trip back in time on the Holcomb Valley Gold Rush Expedition. These tours are offered year-round, and professional drivers are knowledgeable about the vegetation, geology & history of Big Bear and the surrounding back country.

These are just a few options for vacationing in Big Bear. What’s your favorite springtime activity?
